Early OM Cohort

Young Girl with Infant

This project collected data on prenatal, infant and environmental risk factors for >600 children followed from birth to age 2. Clinical data includes cord blood type-specific pneumococcal antibodies, urine cotinine:creatinine ratios at 2 months of age, and outcome data including tympanic membrane and middle ear findings and middle ear diagnosis from more than 10,000 ear examinations and 3500 tympanograms.  Risk factor data comes from questionnaires.  Maternal prenatal and infant health and illness data to 24 months of age was abstracted from medical records.  Prenatal items include use of tobacco and alcohol, dietary intake, symptoms and illnesses, use of dietary supplements, medications, and drug use. Infant variables included symptoms, illnesses, known and possible risk factors for OM (e.g., day care, family history of OM, method of feeding, introduction of foods, siblings, pets, smoke exposure and 3-day records of dietary intake at 1, 3, and 5 months of age). Eligible study participants and their families were recruited for the Genetic Study.  For more detail on variables collected, see Early OM Study Forms, Early OM Data Dictionaries (Infant or Prenatal).
